Social Problems: Crime and Drugs 27: The possibilities for crime preventions. The author prioritizes how government should invest money on child abuse and its consequences in 4 sections. Prevention is better than incarceration 1 st priority is child abuse. We must invest serious resources on it. It’s the worst and most tragic of the crimes. 4 th leading cause of children’ death. Usually, abused children become abusive and violent. Home visiting by gov. helps reduce child abuse. Study case. Two kinds of families compared. One with home visits, one without. Turns out that those visited were less likely to suffer abuse, more likely to work, and less likely to consume drugs or alcohol. Still don’t know what makes it work. Specific health advice, the relationship developed, or link neglected families to services. The longer family receives support, the less likely they are to commit child abuse. 2
