Negative information is given more credence than positive. o Intuition – Self-evident o Authority – Status of source convinces us that it is true. o Tradition, custom, faith – Societal values embedded in us o Magic, superstition, mysticism – Helps dealing with anxiety Characteristics of research method o Based on curiosity and asking questions Desire to find an answer to a puzzling question o A systematic process Proceeds in a step-by-step manner, employing an ordered system of inquiry o Potentially replicable Others can reproduce it o Reflexive and self-critical Reports flaws and threats to validity. o Cumulative and self-correcting Creates a shared history that allows it to evolve and grow o Cyclical Proceeds in stages and ends where it started CH2 Measuring variables o Concept – An abstraction based on characteristics of perceived reality. Name given to something that occurs. x = cyber bulling o Variable – Concept that can be measured. Needs to have two or more values/characteristics. x = gender (male and female) o Conceptual definition – Looking up or defining and stating the concept. Make sure it’s clear, use different terms than the word itself, and make sure definition doesn’t just point to a related concept and not the concept. x
