Chapter 27: Plants Cyanobacteria were probably the first to adapt to intertidal zones and then to spread into shallow, coastal streams. Later, green algae (living near water’s edge, or perhaps in a moist terrestrial environment, became the ancestors of modern plants) and fungi.
