1. Mix .2g tetraphenylcyclopentadienone, .1g of anthranilic acid, 2.5mL 1,2- dimethoxyethane in a 10mL round bottom flask. 2. Clamp the flask 3. Attach air condenser. 4. Dissolve .15mL of isopentyl nitrite (isoamyl nitrite) in 1 mL of 1,2- dimethoxyethane in a vial in a hood a. CAUTION: Isopentyl nitrite is a powerful heart stimulant. Avoid breathing. Dispense this compound in the hood. Refrigerate when not in use. Restopper the bottle after usage in order to minimize contact with air. Isopentyl nitrite is both air and light sensitive. 5. Bring mixture to a gentle boil. 6. Add isopentyl nitrite solution to the rxn mixture through the top of the condenser over a ~1 min. period. 7. Rinse the vial that isopentyl nitrite sol. was in with a few drops of 1,2- dimethoxyethane 8. Add 1,2-dimethoxyethane and rinse to the rxn mixture. 9. Reflux the mixture until a color change (purple yellow orange) a. If it doesn’t happen within 10 minutes, add 1 or 2 drops of pure isopentyl nitrite. 10. Cool rxn mixture to RT
