Exp 3 Procedure 1. Dissolve 150 mg (.15g) of camphor in 1mL of methanol in 25mL Erlenmeyer flask. 2. CAUTIOUSLY add .04 g of sodium borohydride every 30 seconds to the solution in the flask. a. This ensures complete reduction of camphor. This way the side reaction can be minimized. 3. IMMEDIATELY place the cap back on the bottle. a. Why: 4. Heat the reaction mixture (@ 1-2) to a gentle boil for 5 minutes. a. Like with other solvents that possess acidic protons, sodium borohydride reacts slowly with methanol at room temperature and faster at elevated temperatures. 5. Place ice in watch glass; place that watch glass on top of the flask to prevent the solvent from evaporating a. Why: Prevents the solvent (methanol) to evaporate entirely if the mixture is heated too much. The boiling solvent condenses on the cold watch glass and drips back into the flask. If camphor and sodium borohydride are in solid forms, they reach extremely slowly. 6. Cool rxn mixture to room temp.
