Wilhelmi Wilhelmi, JohnPaul En Hua Zhang CHINESE241-Contemp Chinese Lit 6 October 2009 Socialist Realism The stories “Rhymes of Li Yu-Tsai” by Chao Shuli and “When I was in Xia Village” by Ding Ling are two stories that show social issues for concern through the eyes of the main characters. The main issue overall is equality among the people of China. Both stories present this issue during the second Sino-Japanese war, which lasted from July 7, 1937 to September 9, 1945. The social issue of equality in “When I was in Xia Village” by Ding Ling was that of women’s rights. In “Rhymes of Li Yu-Tsai” by Chao Shuli, the social issue of equality is of the peasant working class. This paper will show how both stories present social issue of concern (socialist realism) during the second Sino-Japanese war and their fight for communism. For one to understand how both readings present the issues of social concern (socialist realism) we must understand more than the two stories “Rhymes of Li Yu- Tsai” and “When I was in Xia Village”.
