Charlie Chaplin Armani Bostic Pd. 5 Charles Spencer Chaplin was born April 26, 1889 in London England. Charlie Chaplin’s father was a notorious drinker and abandoned Charlie, his mother, and half-brother, Sydney, shorty after Charlie’s birth. Charlie’s mother was a music hall singer, who went buy the stage name Lily Harley, and would suffer severe mental issues and was committed to an asylum. Charlie Chaplin’s first performance happened when his mother lost her voice in the middle of a show, and had the stage manager push a five-year-old Charlie onto the stage to replace her. His mothers voice never returned and eventually ran out of money. Charlie and Sydney had to make a new home for themselves in London’s workhouses. Charlie decided in 1897 to use his mother’s contacts to land a part in a clog-dancing troupe named the Eight Lancashire Lads. Eventually stage work came his way. Charlie Chaplin made his acting debut as a pageboy in a production of Sherlock Holmes. In 1914 Chaplin made his film debut
