Armani Bostic February 25, 2014 Essay By the mid-1800s, American artist and writers began to develop styles that reflected American optimism and energy. Before that, during the early 1800s, a new artistic movement began in Europe, called Romanticism. While thinkers of the Enlightenment emphasized reason, Romantics placed more value on nature, emotions, and imagination. A small group of writers/thinkers in New England made an American form of Romanticism, called transcendentalism, which was a movement that sought to explore the relationship between humans and nature through emotions rather that through reason.
