1) Advantages of Diesel: 1. Require less maintenance 2. Not as polluting as steam power, modern units produce low levels of exhaust emissions 3. More efficient- more power from less diesel 4. Internal combustion engine, electric transmission most common Advantages of Steam: 1. Less affected by reduction in air pressure at high altitudes Disadvantages of Steam: 1. Rate limited by speed at which fuel is fed into the fire, some locomotives became huge 2.
