PART A – CONCRETE MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY (40 Marks) ° Answers should be relevant to the question. ° Marks will be reduced for correct answers which also contain unnecessary and irrelevant details. ° Negative marks will apply for statements which demonstrate ignorance. QUESTION 1 (8 Marks) List the four of the most important structural engineering properties of hardened concrete. For each of the 4 properties, outline the major factors (raw materials, mix design, and construction) that can improve these mechanical properties. QUESTION 2 (8 Marks) Discuss the shrinkage and creep properties of concrete. Your discussion should include: (i) Definition and description of the shrinkage and creep properties of concrete; (ii) The factors that affect the shrinkage and creep properties of concrete; (iii) How the shrinkage and creep values are estimated in structural design; and (iv) How shrinkage and creep affect the performance of concrete structures, discuss both positive and negative effects. QUESTION 3 (8 Marks) Describe why a superplasticiser admixture is sometimes used in concrete. What are the mechanisms between cement and superplastisers that cause this behaviour (how does it work)? Describe a construction situation in which you would recommend a superplastiser and how does it benefit the properties of concrete during construction? If you overdosed a concrete mixture with superplasticiser, what could be the negative effects?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
