Kenney, Duncan TA Laurence Young F 1 Mus15 W09 Concert Report On Wednesday evening, I attended the UCSB Symphony Orchestra accompanied by the featured winners from the concerto competition. The performance was held at the Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall, the same place where lectures take place, so naturally, after I bought my ticket, I found the same seat I normally sit in during class. The atmosphere was much more relaxed and casual than that of the Tokyo String Quartet. The first piece the musicians performed was a flute concerto composed by Albert Perilhou titled Ballade for Flute and Orchestra . As in most concertos, the flutist was dressed in a vibrant colored dress, while the rest of the orchestra was in all black. The accompanying orchestra began the piece with a gloomy feel, however, the flute countered the darkness with a series of intricate notes played in a high register. I was absolutely amazed at the flutist’s ability to take such large continuous breaths to produce the vibrant sound that was coming from her instrument. Not surprisingly, the piece was
