Chapter 3: Biogeochemical Cycles 1) How Chemicals Cycle a. Biogeochemical cycles is the path a chemical takes through Earth’s system through the four major components i. Atmosphere, Hydrosphere (oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater, glaciers), Lithosphere (rocks and soil), and Biosphere (plants and animals) b. Chemical Reaction is the process in which new chemicals are formed from elements and compounds that undergo a chemical change c. A source is a storage compartment that releases a chemical to another location i. A source is called net source if output exceeds input ii. Fossil fuels, when burned, are a source of carbon which is released into the atmosphere d. A sink is when a chemical enters a storage compartment from another compartment i. A sink is called a Net sink if input exceeds output ii. i.e. The forests of the world are a sink for carbon from the atmosphere storing it in wood, leaves, and roots e. Flux is the rate of transfer which is typically measured in Mass/Time 2) Biogeochemical Cycles and Limiting Factors a. Living things need only 24 elements—and are divided into two categories i. Macronutrients—are required in large amounts by all life 1. “Big Six” Carbon (basic building block), oxygen, hydrogen, phosphorus (energy element), nitrogen (makes proteins), sulfur ii. Micronutrients—are either required in small amounts by all life or
