Mitosis - cell divisions that maintain chromosome number Meiosis - cell divisions that halve chromosome number Sporophyte Spore - resting stage; mega - large = female; micro - small=male! -phyte = plant -cyte = cell Gametophyte Archegonium - a structure that contains the female gamete, an egg Arche = old; gonium = vessel, a structure in which reproductive cells are formed Antheridium - a structure that contains male gametes Gametes - fuse to make a zygote Embryo - a zygote that begins cell divisions
