Characters that do not play major roles are often looked at as unimportant or are seen to have no significance to the author’s work. A minor character is a character in a piece of literature which appears only briefly. The Glass Menagerieuses minor characters to effectively portray character development, plot development and theme. Laura learns to have self-confidence and builds her self-esteem with the help of Jim O’Connor. Jim causes the final outcome of the play where Tom makes his big decision. He also illustrates themes such as illusion versus reality. Jim O’Connor is an example of a minor character in The Glass Menageriewho influences character improvement, affects the outcome of the plot and delineates theme. Jim O’Connor has a huge impact on Laura’s character development. After he visits the Wingfield residence for dinner, one sees a change in Laura’s character. She originally has low self-esteem due to her imagination making the noise from her leg brace sound louder than it actually is.
