Homework 2: Due at the beginning of class 02/20/09 Problem 1. In the questions below, say whether the statement is true or false. You don’t need to present any explanation. However, understanding why you have the answer will help you to prepare the exam. (a) In the absence of any work done on a system, heat will always flow from hot to cold bodies (it is assumed that the two bodies are thermally isolated from the surrounding). (b) Reversible process is the one that does not accompany any energy change (i.e. d U sys = 0) during the process. (c) In a cyclic process (a process where the initial and final states are identical), the total entropy change is equal to 0. (d) Spontaneous transformations can be used to do work. (e) The entropy change of a system in an irreversible transformation is greater than that of a reversible transformation ( reversible system le irreversib system S S Δ > Δ ). Problem 2.
