Kevin McDermott Professor Kay 4/06/08 Uninsured in America: Life and Death in the Land of Opportunity America is known as one of the best countries in the world. Yet we have one of the worst health care systems out there. How can one of the most powerful and wealthiest nations have such a horrible health care system that leaves many Americans without access to health care? Susan Starr Sered and Rushika Fernandopulle, authors of Uninsured in America , mention the “Death Spiral”, which is just how many insured, healthy Americans became uninsured in America. With employment-based health insurance being the most widely used health insurance after WW2, people lived healthy lives. However, times have changed, people do not hold jobs as long as they once did, and health care costs have greatly increased in America compared to other countries such as Canada and Great Britain. No one chooses to be uninsured in America; everyone wants to be insured and it is something that we must fight for. I honestly do not even know where to start with poor Edna of Rantoul, Illinois.
