Lecture 47- Conservation What Can Change? -Dr. Daniel Pauly says that problems of the past such as smoking and slavery that seemed impossible to change were solved or fixed in most places. His point is, you can make change. -Societal attitudes: quietest: “who am I to tell someone what to do?”; activist: tells people what to do, intolerant -Donald R. Griffin discovered eco location. He did so many different experiments on the phenomena that he thought of it as a “magic well” (with an infinite number of ideas, experiments), but not everything is inexhaustible Agropectens irradians -the bay scallop -Has been used by people for over 2000 years -Decline in scallops lead to the end of a fishery -Mesopredators of the scallops: skates, rays -An increase in skate and ray population arose with a decrease in scallop population -Shark fin became a delicacy (US $700/kg); a decrease in sharks leads to an increase in skate and ray population Enforcement -Poacher: someone taking plants/animals illegally
