Biology October-08-08 Cell Cycling Why do daughter cells inherit genes from their mother cells? The inheritance of sameness: - DNA double helix is relatively stable over time (doesn’t break down like RNA). - During replication, template strand of DNA dictates sequence of new DNA by complimentary base pairing. o Always replicate form 3’ end to 5’ end o Semi-conservative and semi-discontinuous o Primers are RNA and have AU compliment - Proofreading, excision repair, and telomerase tend to prevent errors and loss of coding regions. - Cell cycle checkpoints ensure DNA is repaired, replicated and segregated before the next stage. - Cytoskeleton mediates precise separation of replicated chromosomes. Eukaryotic chromosomes are quite large. Replication begins in several places (hundreds of origins) in order for it to be done quickly enough. Replication forks are bi-directional (they travel in both directions from each origin). Prokaryotes have circular genomes (as well as chloroplasts and mitochondrion). They replicate from a
