September 22, 2008 * from last time – Urey Miller only made monomers, not polypeptide chains, thalidomide enantiomers were chemically identical closest star is Alpha Centauri – 4.22 light years away we can’t go to other places but we can try to communicate with them using radio waves don’t confuse astronomy/astrology and cosmology/cosmetology The Drake Equation N = N s × f p × n e × f l × f i × f c × L N = Number of advanced civilizations in our galaxy no correct answer – we don’t know!! N s = Number of stars F p = Proportion of stars that form planets N e = Number of habitable planets per star system (has everything to do with distance from parent star) F l = Fraction of planetary systems that actually develop life F i , F c = Proportion of planets with intelligent, communicating life – not easy to count – whales do not count – set at 10% L = Lifetime of a civilization probably 200 to 400 billion stars in our galaxy
