The European Dynastic Order – September 10 th , 2008 Old regime: before the 18 th century States organized around the idea of the “dynasty” This old idea of a state will be replaced by a “nationstate”: how to define a nationstate? By language? Religion? Ethnic group? Most European states ruled by monarchs (exceptions include to the Dutch Republic, or Republic of Venice, Republic of Genoa, Swiss Confederation, however it was NOT democratic in nature, but rather ruled by a group of people (Oligarchy). Most people thought this was not normal, and rather monarchy was strong) Mostly run by males, though there were females who ruled Each empire slowly gathered lands over time These states were very diverse in their nature, spanning various linguistics, religion, and ethnic group Nature of Power: Absolutism or absolutism?
