Siming Zhu [sz86] Assignment 3.1 February 8, 2009 It is 9:30 AM on a warm and humid Tuesday morning in April at Cornell (very unusual). Sara leaves her apartment in college town to go take the last exam she needs in order to graduate, which happens to start at 10AM and is all the way at Riley Robb. She knows from four years of experience that it will take her precisely 25 minutes to walk from her apartment to Riley Robb. As she starts her journey for the very last time, a number of subsystems that are the components of Sara’s human system are activated. The components of her kinetic system most noticeably at work in this situation are her hips, legs, feet and arms (and their respective muscles). As Sara takes her first step, the muscles in her right leg are working to lift her right foot and leg off the ground and then setting it down so that the right foot (and the connected leg) is in front of the left. The left leg then continues the same process of lifting and placing the connected left foot in front of right. As Sara proceeds to take each step, her hips will move from side to side, shifting her weight from one leg to the other, which in turn maintains Sara’s balance during this walk. Her arms will instinctively swing in a coordinated manner to move out of the way of Sara’s swaying hips. Also at work during this walk are Sara’s circulatory system, respiratory
