Mood in MDD  Deeply depressed mood is the  core symptom. Anhedonia (inability to  experience pleasure).  May also exhibit irritability,  hostility, guilt.

Cognition  Rumination (Getting stuck on  particular thoughts). Themes of loss and defeat. Low self-esteem. Hopelessness/helplessness.

Depression  and Pseudo-dementia  MDD can interfere with basic  cognitive processes, including  memory, reasoning, and attention. Depressed individuals may seem  forgetful, disoriented, or easily  confused. Sometimes, misdiagnosed as  dementia (especially with elderly  populations).

Motivation  Depressed individuals often  lack energy and motivation.   They complain of lethargy and  a general feeling of tiredness. Intervention becomes difficult  because the patient may lack  the energy to take part in  therapy.
