8 – Stellar Structure #1 Arthur Stanley Eddington 1920 2 The Plan • To develop a physical model of a solar like star. • It’s all Newtonian physics except for the fusion reactions needed to liberate the required thermal energy. • Several equations i.e. physical concepts, will all be in play at the same time – The ideal solution is to solve the set of equation simultaneously. – We will approach the problem by solving the equations as a set of sequential solutions. 3 Issues • We have to have a way to generate the energy. (Fusion of Hydrogen in the core) • A mechanism is needed to get the energy to the surface. (Radiative Transfer) • Pressure balance is essential. (Hydrostatic Equilibrium) • A way to connect density, temperature and pressure (Equation of State) 4 The Complete Solution • There are seven functions of radius, r. They are: – P pressure* P(r = r s ) = 0 – M mass* M(r = 0) = 0, M(r = r s ) = M s ρ density – T temperature* (T(r~0) ~ 16x10 6 K ) κ opacity – L luminosity* L(r = 0) = 0 ε
