37 – Dark Matter 2 The Plan • Evidence of dark mater: – Rotation Curves of galaxies, z ~ 0.1 – Random motions inside clusters of galaxies, z ~ 0.5 – Elemental ratios from the first three minutes, z ~ 10 8.5 – WMAP measurements of the CMB give m =0.279 and baryons account for b = 0.046. What makes up the rest of the mass, dm =0.233 ? z ~10 3 • Candidates: – Neutrinos – Axions – Nonbaryonic – Primordial black holes 3 Rotation curve http://www-astronomy.mps.ohio-state.edu/~pogge Dark Matter 4 Dark matter in Clusters • First observed by Fritz Zwicky (1933) in the Coma Cluster M dynamic 400 x M luminous . • S. Smith (1936) observed dark matter in the Coma Cluster M dynamic 200 x M luminous . • Wasn’t accepted for 40 years when Vera Rubin found “excess” mass in spiral galaxies.
