Unformatted text preview: Chapter 4: Tissues Body Building: Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems Tissue Tissue collection of specialized cells and cell products Histology Histology the study of tissues Objectives: Examine 4 main types of tissue found in the body Epithelial Connective Muscle Neural Describe the following for each: physical attributes where they can be found in the body general function(s) they serve There are multiple subtypes of these tissues Types of Tissues Epithelial Tissue Mostly cellular in makeup Many subtypes, classified by shape of cells and layering of cells Connective Tissue Less cells, more other stuff Widely varied subtypes, classified by physical properties ** we will focus on these 2 types for now Muscle Tissue Will discuss in more detail in Chap 9 Neural Tissue Will discuss in more detail in Chap 11 Epithelial Tissues Includes: Epithelia cover surfaces, line passageways of the body Glands generate important secretions Functions: Protective barrier Control permeability Provide sensation Produce specialized secretions Epithelial Tissues Some characteristics to note: Composed mostly of cells (little extracellular material) Attachment between cells and to a common base Sometimes referred to as basement membrane Cells may be specialized for certain functions Exhibit POLARITY Avascular Can regenerate...
