THEN[W YORKER A LONG, STRANGE T~P It's unjust that the Academy didn't nominate Wes Anderson's "The Darjeeling Limited" (Fox) inany category, but inexplicable that they didn't invent aspecial one for it:Best Luggage. An exquisite set of suitcases, credited to Marc Jacobs forLouis Vuitton, plays a large role in thisblissful, loopy comedy offamily anguish and sublimated tenderness. The film's subject iscoming home, and it's asign ofAnderson's comic genius that ittakes apicaresque jaunt through Indiaby three brothers, estranged since their father's funeral ayear ago, todo so. The domineering Francis (Owen Wilson), who isrecovering from amotorcycle accident, has convened the other two--Peter (Adrien Brody), a regular guy inapanic over the impending birth ofhis first child, and Jack (Jason Schwartzman), aliterary romantic trapped inatroubled relationship-for a "spiritual journey," which he plans down tothe minute. The tripbrings odd misadventure, off-kilter romance, and sudden danger, but thereal story involves coming to terms with alifetime of ingrained resentments plus grief ofmore recent vintage.
