May 23, 2008 Page 1 of 3 Lecture 23 The Reagan Revolution Reagan’s Admirers Reagan had intense admires and equally intense opposers He was an inheritor of FDRs old coalitions He was a Republican who attracted Democrats He instilled patriotism and pride in America He promoted free market, cut taxes, and encouraged deregulation He took large steps to stop the Cold War Inflation cut back to 4% and unemployment 5.5% Made people like Donald Trump be the heroes of the 80s He rebuilt the military He promoted entrepreneurship Stimulated the economy Reagan’s Critics Reagan was characterized as “a cardboard messiah” Income gabs between the rich and poor widened considerably He ignored the AIDs crisis and the homeless The national debt sky rocketed American industrial workers were the biggest losers of the time à outsourcing The US became the world’s largest debtor nation He backed Saddam Hussein and caused the Iran-Contra affair
