April 23, 2008 Page 1 of 2 Lecture 11 McCarthy(ism) The Second Red Scare The Cold War affected domestic policy It was refereed to as the 2 nd Red Scare (crusade against communism) Joe McCarthy Gives a Speech at Wheeling: February 9, 1950 Joe McCarthy caused mass hysteria against communism Many people lost their jobs and were ostracized curing the communist witch hunt Was McCarthy Right? The Soviets did have spies in America—McCarthy was right These spies acquired information regarding the Manhattan Project Citizens may question: Though he faked a lot of data and made a lot of errors, was he closer to the truth than those who questioned his method and said there was not reason for alarm. They may also question: Should we conclude that whatever harm came to the country from spies who told our secrets to the Soviets was overshadowed by the reign of terror McCarthy produced which created a climate in which the principles of fairness and due process disappeared Would There Have Been McCarthyism Without McCarthy? Historians may ask: How could so many Americans have become convinced that a crusade
