April 14, 2008 Page 1 of 3 Lecture 7 1941 The World In 1935, social security was enacted high mark of the New Deal Congress prevented FDR from enacting more domestic policy reforms Hitler came to power in 1933 Emperor Hirohito of Japan planed on invading China FDR’s personal beliefs of intervention differed from that of the American people Backlash Against WWI A backlash developed against America participating in WWI because of the economic destruction As the 1930’s moved on, it was said that Woodrow Wilson’s participation was bad and a theory that Wall Street got Wilson the declare war on Germany to protect their loans to England, same with the arms manufacturers Sparked the first big student anti-war movement in the 1930s to protest violence and the drafts Nye Committee and Economic Motive The Nye Committee was led by Gerald Nye of North Dakota He investigated into the reasons for the United States entry to WWI sparked controversy American bankers and ammunition makers profited from WWI Staff uncovered facts about the lobbying activities and profits of American companies For example: The Du Point company’s earning went form $5 million in 1914 to $82 million in 1918 Neutrality Legislation Neutrality Legislation was passed during a time when Congress would
