April 2, 2008 Page 1 of 2 Lecture 2 Tensions Caused by WWI Making the World Safe for Democracy Woodrow Wilson’s War to End All War WWI sparked anti-German hysteria ; people were imprisoned for free speech Peace did not bring stability after WWI instead started a nation scared of revolutions and communists radicals Spread of a communism scare in America Over 3,000 strikes paralyzed the American economy in 1919 Strikers had bread and butter goals mayor of Seattle called them communists Postwar Red Scare Spring of 1919 = letter bombs arrived by mail to the mayor of Seattle and a former Senator (injured his housekeep) 30 more bombs intercepted Bombs destroyed A. Mitchell Palmer ’s house this showed some kind of terrorist conspiracy (unlikely that communists were behind it) Summer of 1919 = talk of a communist revolution Palmer launched the First War on Terrorism Palmer had previously worked for progressive movements (women’s rights), but
