Amy Sexton Art 224 3 Artists Stephen DeStaebler Stephen DeStaebler, a nationally known artist from the San Francisco Bay area, bases his work on the expressive potential of the human figure. After working primarily in clay during the 1960's and 1970's, he began to work with bronze in the 1980's and began his association with Artworks Foundry, starting in the early 1980's. He is best known for his fired clay or bronze sculptures that reflect nature and the human figures. Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1933, DeStaebler grew up in the Midwest, where he received his early academic training. He attended Princeton University and graduated with honors in Religion 1954. During the summers as an undergraduate, he also studied with Robert Motherwell and Ben Shahn at Black Mountain College. He ended leaving for the San Francisco Bay area, spending most of his time and putting out most of his work there. I really enjoyed DeStaebler’s work
