Amy Sexton 10/2/08 Lit Trans 275 Response Paper Discussion 12:05 Thu Anne Lisbeth “Then he would cry, but what nobody knows nobody cares for; so he would cry till he was tired, and then fall asleep; and while we are asleep we can feel neither hunger nor thirst. Ah, yes; sleep is a capital invention.” (1) Anne Lisbeth is a story written by Hans Christen Andersen in 1859 about a woman and her unloved son. Anne Lisbeth does not care about her own son. She sends him to the laborer’s wife to be nursed and taken care of while she takes care of the count’s son. The count’s son grows older and Anne Lisbeth looses his love, meanwhile her own son tries to take a vessel out to sea, shipwrecks and dies. After learning of his death, Anne has no emotions at all. She is forced to walk home along the sea shore which ultimately leads her to an apparition of her dead son asking for his grave to be dug. Anne Lisbeth does not dig the grave in the time allotted, so her son takes half of her soul with him out to sea. You cannot get into heaven without a soul, so she spends a year and a day waiting for him which ultimately brings back her soul. The main theme in this story is love. Another side theme is the idea of religion. Anne Lisbeth’s love for the count child but not for her own son, her love for herself and her love that develops in her heart for her own child in the end of the story all circle around the same theme: Love. “He who filled her every thought! he whom she loved best, and who was her whole earthly pride!” (2) Anne Lisbeth loved her count child. She took care of him and treated him as if he were her own child. This pun
