These are 2 articles that support the idea that sustainable development is an important issue. Article 1 Authors: Marijke Meul, Frank Nevens, Dirk Reheul Title: Validating sustainability indicators: Focus on ecological aspects of Flemish dairy farms Source: Ecological Indicators; Mar2009, Vol. 9 Issue 2, p284-295, 12p Summary: This article is about the need for validation of indicator-based sustainability monitoring tools for agriculture. Over recent decades, agriculture companies have developed a wide array of these types of tools but the government/society is not paying enough attention to the real effects that they are having on our environment. This particular article places particular emphasis on developing a procedure to validate MOTIFS (Monitoring Tool for Integrating Farm Sustainability) and a number of ecological factors (nutrient, water, and energy use). This is accomplished through an accuracy and credibility evaluation. The gist of these evaluations is not extremely important for this assignment, but the authors conclude that MOTIFS is a potentially effective sustainability monitoring tool. Analysis: This article should be considered a support for sustainable development because it presents actual solutions to current problems (particularly agricultural-based). The authors demonstrate how focusing on MOTIFS and evaluating nutrient use, energy use, water use, and water quality of specific agricultural tools will overall help in sustaining our environment for years to come. Thus this article shows support for sustainable development among agricultural groups. People are looking to discover new ways to become eco-friendly in the agricultural field while remaining efficient in their work. Article 2
