Ryan McCreery ECE Lecture #3 September 6, 2007 Modern Lighting Systems The third energy seminar lecture was given by Russ MacAdam representing Lutron Electronics Co., Inc. During this seminar, Mr. MacAdam began by introducing the class with some background information on energy savings and lighting control. He made it very clear that lighting control was first presented to society in 1961 by Lutron. Although the first solid-state dimmer was invented at this time by Lutron, there have been many more firsts in lighting control by Lutron over all other lighting control providers combined (e.g. wireless lighting control systems, linear slide dimmer, 1% fluorescent dimming, etc.). Then, Mr. MacAdam went into some of the energy and lighting statistics. Apparently, lighting consumes 25% of the total electricity used in the US. But when comparing this statistic to the actual amount of energy used by society, only 9% of annual energy consumption comes from lighting in residential areas. But lighting accounts for 44% of annual energy consumption in office buildings. This is quite a
