1. (15) A long silica glass fiber with circular cross-section having a slight diameter fluctuation was placed in a hot water of 80 ºC. Silica glass has measurable solubility in hot water at this temperature. After a while, the fiber developed a periodic variation in diameter, with the largest diameter of 120 μm and smallest diameter of 100 μm. The trace of the fiber surface along the fiber length direction can be approximated by a sinusoidal curve. Find out the radii of curvature of the fiber surface at the largest diameter part as well as at the smallest diameter part. 2. (20) Following figure represents two spherical gold particles partially joined. The normalized equilibrium vacancy concentration (number of vacancy per unit volume/ number of atoms in unit volume) in a large piece of gold with a flat surface was 1 x 10 -5 at 1000 ºC. Compared with the value at the flat surface, calculate the % difference in the normalized equilibrium vacancy concentration, at the same temperature, at near the neck, marked A.
