Forms of Energy: Heat – the transfer of energy due to a temperature difference Work – a force through a distance Internal Energy – microscopic energy stored in the molecules of a substance Kinetic Energy – energy due to motion Potential Energy – energy due to elevation in a gravitational field Other forms of energy (not addressed in this course): electrical energy, nuclear energy, etc. EQW ∆= − KE PE U Q W ∆+ ∆=− E – change in total energy during a process KE – change in kinetic energy during a process PE – change in potential energy during a process U – change in internal energy during a process Q – net heat added to a system during a process W – net work done by a system during a process Lecture 1 Page 3
