17/02/2008 21:28:00 Chapter One  Psychology is about understanding all the things we do Psychology teaches us a healthy respect for the complexity of behavior  Psychology comes from the two Greek words psyche meaning soul and logos  referring to the study of a subject Psychology’s intellectual parents were the disciplines of philosophy and physiology Wilhelm Wundt established the first formal laboratory for research in psychology at  the University of Leipzig 1879 psychology’s “date of birth” Wundt reasoned that consciousness (awareness of immediate experience) is the  main subject in the study of psychology Debates between structuralism and functionalism  Structuralism  o Emerged from Edward Titchener  o Based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness  into its basic elements and investigate how these elements are related  o Want to identify the fundamental components of conscious experience, such  as sensation, feelings, and images o Credited for lab studies in psychology  o Depends on method of introspection-the careful, systematic self-observation  of one’s own conscious experience  Required training to make the subject more objective and more  aware After trained participants were often exposed to auditory tones,  optical illusions, and visual stimuli and are asked to analyze  what they experience  Functionalism  o Based on belief that psychology should investigate the function of purpose  of consciousness, rather than its structure  o William James
