NATS March 5 Announcements: - Written Assignment o First draft due Thursday, March 26 o Length: Less than one page. Single or double spaced. o Must be typed o Must have something to do with astronomy o You can choose a topic, or use one of these ideas: Use scientific arguments for or against a theory, such as the idea that the moon landing was faked Discuss an idea about astronomy you had before the class that has been changed by what you learned; describe why you previously held the other belief, and why you don’t any more. - Spectroscopy o Blue, green, red= colored image o Wavelengths: Blue: .45 microns (μm; millionth of a meter) Green: .55 microns Red: .65 microns Note: white is an equal mix of all the colors - The Doppler Effect o A firetruck moving toward you sounds different than one moving away from you The frequency of the sound is higher when it moves towards you o The same thing happens with light When a source moves towards you, its frequency gets higher, or bluer - The Doppler Effect for Light o Laboratory spectrum: lines at rest wavelengths o Object 1: lines redshifted: object moving away from us
