NATS March 12 Announcements: - Homework due Tuesday after spring break. First draft of written assignment due following Thursday. - Moons, Rings, Asteroids… o The Sun dominates the mass of the Solar System o Planets dominate mass of circumstellar material o Moons, rings, asteroids, comets tell us something about how planets formed o They may also affect our existence on Earth! - Moons of Mars o Mars has moons, but they are puny o Probably asteroids that passed close-by and were captured by Mars’ gravity - Moon of Earth o Our moon is made of “Earth-stuff” o A giant collision smashed lots of Earth debris into space Agglomerated together to form Moon o Tidal forces moved Moon to current orbit o Moon has no atmosphere; surface doesn’t change much o Moon shows evidence for impact cratering o Also shows old lava flows; Moon had volcanoes o Cratering rate changed with time; much lower today o Moon experiences erosion No rain or wind, so Earth-like erosion processes don’t work
