Newtons laws o Newton proposed three fundamentals laws to descrive the motion of everything o These laws proveide an explanitiary keplers laws and generalize then to any orbit (not just around the sun) Newtons first law o A body at rest will stay at rest. A body in motion will stay in motion o Another way of saying this is that tings have inertia o Gallileo had actually posited the same law Newtons second law[ F=MA] o A force exerted on an object causes an acceleration o For a given force, lighter objects will be accelerated more then heavy ones Newtons third lay o For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction Planetay orbits: 1 st lay o Planets would be sitting still or moving in straight lines is there was not forse Curved orbits mean plantes are being acted on by some force o Lighter bodies accelerated more by given force Planetary orbits: 3 rd law o If the sun exerts force on the planets, the planets exert the same forse back on the sun o Planetary orbits are ellipses with the center of mass of the system at one
