NATS March 3 (MY 21 ST BIRTHDAY! ) - Light o What is light? Something we can see An electromagnetic wave A collection of little packets of energy All of the above - Basic Properties of Light o Light has a wavelength and a frequency: F=c/λ o C, the speed of light, is constant and does not depend on F or λ o The energy of an individual photon depends on f: E=hf Energy is proportional to frequency o The intensity of a beam of light depends on the number of photons too - Interaction of Light and Matter o How do we “see” an object? Our eyes collect light Radiated light Reflected light o Am I radiating light? Yes. Just not radiating light you can see. Not radiating visible light. Could see in night vision/infrared goggles. - Diagram from book: o The mirror reflects all colors of visible light o The chair is red because it scatters red light but absorbs all other colors
