CREATING HPWS 1. What are the fundamental principles of high-performance work systems? Shared information Knowledge development Performance-reward linkage Egalitarianism 2. Describe how the components of the work system fit together and support strategy. Components of the work system fit together both internally and externally. Internal fit: situation in which all the internal elements of the work system complement & reinforce one another. Ex: a first-rate selection system may be of no use if it’s not working in conjunction with training & development activities. If a new compensation program elicits and reinforces behaviors that are directly opposed to the goals laid out in performance planning, the 2 components would be working at cross purposes. Changes in 1 component affect all other components. Since all pieces are interdependent, a new compensation system may have no effect on performance if it’s implemented on its own.
