Zoology 470 – 2009 – Course handouts Page 5 Some definitions: Totipotent : Under the appropriate conditions, able to make any cell in the embryo/body. Cells from eight-cell embryos are totipotent. Pluripotent : Under the appropriate conditions, able to make many cell types in the embryo/body. Inner cell mass cells (and maybe embryonic germ cells) are pluripotent. Multipotent : Under the appropriate conditions, able to make several different cell types in the embryo/body. Adult stem cells are multipotent, and may be pluripotent.
