Shannon MacAdams Eric Kirchoff TA: Miaoyin (Kevin) Wang Physics 232, Section 232-006 Lab performed March 24, 2009 Lab due March 31, 2009 Lab Nine: Hydrogen Balmer Series and Rydberg Constant Introduction: This experiment is performed to study the emission of light from a hydrogen discharge source, to learn the empirical formulas to characterize the pattern of spectral lines form hydrogen, to learn the postulates for developing the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom, to study and develop the Bohr theory of the hydrogen atom, to measure the wavelengths of Bohr series of visible emission lines from hydrogen, and to learn to analyze wavelength data to determine the Rydberg constant using the Bohr model formulation. This lab uses the general principles from diffraction of light at different wavelengths to demonstrate the above stated principles. This is done and measured using a device called spectrometer. The diffraction patterns are seen through a diffraction gradient and perceived through the eyepiece of the device. The wavelength of light can be measured through the
