19. When looking at human capital metrics, employee retention is one of the three main factors SYSCO uses to help predict how well the company is doing and will be doing within this metric in the future. With 75%, (about three billion dollars), of the company’s costs being people related, employee retention is key. Improvements in employee retention increase the value of shares due to the decreased costs from training new employees and hiring procedures. Ken Carrig, (Senior VP & CAO, SYSCO Corporation), stated in the case video that every five million dollars saved due to retention increases shares by about a penny. For example, with the estimated amount money saved with the retention of delivery drivers being $50,000,000, investors would profit with a ten cent increase on each of their shares. 20. Work climate and employee satisfaction scores are so important to SYSCO because these scores help the company determine what practices and processes are helping to drive the human capital indices in each operating company.
