Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” BOOK SIX: 423-460 Your text gives a great introduction to this story, so I strongly suggest you read 423-426 before reading the story. Here are some questions to get you ready for discussion on Tuesday 4/7. Although I won’t be collecting your answers, you should print this page and make some notes in answer to these questions. 1. This piece is definitely satire. Consider how Kafka satirizes literature and literary elements: characterization, setting, plot, resolutions. Also consider how Kafka satirizes society and family. Characterization: the younger sister takes over the household and is braver than the parents to take care of Gregor. Gregor is hard working and helps his family a lot, but is obviously not really cared for because he becomes a nuisance when he becomes the bug. Setting: the setting takes place in a common home. Plot: whimsical because he becomes a bug. Resolutions: the fact that Gregor just dies in the end when his family was
