Chapter 10 Introduction The model age of juvenile sex offenders tends to be around 14 or 15 with the first offense having happened around 12 or 13 It is rare that juvenile molesters of children have both male and female victims The notion of special needs offenders Most incidents of juvenile sexual aggression involve male perpetrators Most juvenile sex offenders are thought to be victims of prior sexual abuse Three patterns of adaptation for children who experience sexual abuse o Deniers Tend to repress the event o Adjusters Tend to not show any symptoms for a variety of reasons o Acceptors Believe that the abuse is deserved and their fault Most offenses committed by juvenile sex offenders are verbally coercive rather than physically aggressive A small fraction of these incidents result in physical injury If force is used it is usually the minimum necessary to complete the act Offenders usually use bribes or coercion to gain compliance from the victims Juvenile molesters are disposed toward a diagnosis of conduct disorder Male child witnesses to domestic violence tend to engage in externalizing behaviors including acts of interpersonal aggression. Exposure to severe community violence may also increase the likelihood of engaging in violent and antisocial behavior Sexually abusive youth share other common characteristics, including: o High rates of learning disabilities and academic dysfunction o The presence of other behavioral health problems, including substance abuse and conduct disorders o Observed difficulties with impulse control and judgment Seven types of adolescent sex offenders who are likely to come into contact with the juvenile justice or criminal justice system o Naïve experimenters Tend to be young little history of acting out behavior no force or threats o Undersocialized child exploiters Evidence chronic social isolation and social incompetence Includes manipulation, rewards, or other enticement Motivated by a desire for greater self importance and intimacy o Pseudosocialized child exploiters Good social skills Little acting out history
