Unformatted text preview: Introduction Failure to apply juvenile justice resources toward reaching the most at risk youths will result in poor delivery of services to those who are in need of appropriate intervention Assessment o The process that mental health practitioners use to gain information about an offender A wide variety of assessment techniques are used such as aptitude tests, ability tests, personality tests, checklists, rating scales, and behavioral observation in natural or created settings There are two forms of assessment o Psychodiagnostic method Clinical assessment that is holistic and is intended to describe the client in a variety of ways Use of a number of procedures Assesses conscious and unconscious behavioral and cognitive characteristics o Psychometric method Utilizes tests and assessment instruments that are more objective Tests must be reliable and valid Do not rely on clinical judgment of the test giver but solely on the responses by the client This is the point where intervention determines weather delinquency will be short or long term The wrong intervention can lead to increased likelihood of becoming an adult offender Two types of adolescent offenders o Adolescent-limited They cease delinquency at some point in adulthood o Life course-persistent offenders Delinquency carries through to criminal acts throughout adulthood Adolescent-limited versus course persistent juvenile delinquents The majority of individuals who are delinquents during childhood and adolescence stop offending before they reach adulthood. Youthful antisocial and risk prone acts are personal statements of independence Common forms of delinquency can be o Underage drinking/smoking o Minor vandalism o Shoplifting o Occasional truancy from school Most teenage males engage in some criminal conduct Life course persistent juvenile delinquents lack may of the necessary social skills and opportunities possessed by the adolescent-limited delinquent...
