Psych 101 Final Exam Review Module 8 Zygote- fertilized egg; enters into a 2 week period of rapid cell division and develops into the embryo Embryo- developing human organism from 2 weeks after fertilization through the second month Fetus- from 9 weeks after conception to birth; can hear mother’s muffled voice, organs partially developed Teratogens- harmful agents passed to the fetus through the placenta Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)- leading cause of mental retardation; physical and cognitive abnormalities in children caused by mother’s heavy drinking; symptoms can include noticeable facial disproportions. Rooting reflex- baby’s tendency when touched on the cheek to turn toward the touch, open the mouth, and search for the nipple Babies become familiar with smell and sound of their mother w/i 3 weeks. Module 9 Maturation- orderly sequence of genetically designed biological growth processes, relatively uninfluenced by experience Our earliest memories seldom predate our third birthdays. Jean Piaget- revolutionized our understanding of children’s minds, children’s minds are not mini versions of adults, develops in stages through our struggle to make sense of experiences Schema- a concept or framework that organized and interprets information, mental molds into which we pour our experiences Assimilation- interpreting one’s new experience in terms of one’s existing schemas Accommodation- adapting one’s current schemas to incorporate new information Cognition- all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering, and communicating Piaget’s stages of cognitive development: (see chart on p. 143)

1. sensorimotor stage - from birth to two years- infants take in the world through their sensory and motor interactions with objects a. very young infants lack object permanence- the awareness that objects continue to exist when not perceived b.
