After months – though it seemed like years – of campaigning, American voters gave their final verdict on Nov. 4 as Sen. Barack Obama was elected as the 44 th President of the United States of America, the first African-American president in the country’s history. So how, against all odds, did the Junior Senator from Illinois manage to win the world’s most powerful office? Firstly, President-elect Obama enjoyed massive financial support that was essential in allowing him to outspend Sen. McCain in almost all quarters. Unlike his rival, Mr. Obama opted against public funding for his campaign allowing him to raise money without any limitations. Over the course of his presidential campaign, he managed to garner over US$ 600million, an unprecedented amount in the history of presidential campaigns.
